Ensuring Survivors of Color are Seen, Heard & Healed.

Who we are

The Empowered Survivor (TES) is a social health nonprofit established in 2020, to prevent domestic violence and related homicides in underserved minority communities across the Houston, Harris County region.  Recognizing the majority of Harris County’s domestic violence survivors are people of color, namely mainly Black women, TES embraces a culturally-specific victim service approach to ensure survivors have hope and receive the healing services they need in order to flourish and live a life free of violence and abuse.

The 5 Social Determinants of Health

The Empowered Survivor streamlines access to the tools and resources survivors of color need to escape abuse.  We exist to offer restorative justice solutions to empower survivors and their families to live a violence free life because "LOVE DOES NOT HURT."

We follow the Center for Disease Control’s guidelines to identify and provide services based on the five social determinants of health so survivors can emerge from abuse and be safe, happy, and healthy.  By offering culturally-specific services, we ensure survivors of color gain the strength and capacity to begin again after experiencing domestic and/or sexual violence.

“By intentionally denying Black people access to economic opportunities, the ability to build intergenerational wealth, healthcare, education, and a sense of safety from governmental systems, racist policies increase the prevalence of risk factors for domestic violence.”
